CHEVAL LIBERTE TRAILERS AND HORSE TRANSPORTERS – HORSE TRANSPORT IN A NUTSHELL

Sponsored article:

Everyone who is in some way related to horses will eventually find themselves in a situation where transporting a horse from A to B becomes necessary. You may have some doubts as to how, what with and by whom your horse should be transported. Debon is a leader among horse trailer manufacturers. In Europe, it is known as Cheval Liberte. Drawing on many years of their experience, Cheval Liberte elaborate on the topic of horse transport.

Let us reach to the source; out of care for the horse...

The Cheval Liberte brand was established in 1995 by its founder Denis Rulquin (1949 - 2006). The idea was to develop and manufacture high-quality products with affordable prices.  The Rulquin family's great affection for horses resulted in the search for increasingly better solutions which would cater for horses' natural needs. This is how products whose inherent features include comfort, safety, looks and attention to detail, were born.

Passion, vision, goals... success!

Cheval Liberte's motto is: "Our mutual passion and love for horses is our job".

Today, brothers Gregory and Fabien Rulquin focus on the further development of Cheval Liberte products not only in France but also worldwide. Many years of experience, extensive research and observations have enabled them to make constant progress in designing vehicles which ensure the safety of animals during loading, transport and unloading. Cheval Liberte also offers light utility trailers.

Light utility trailers:

Conditions for the transport of animals

According to the Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 of 22 December 2004 on the protection of animals during transport, ‘transport’ means the movement of animals effected by one or more means of transport, including loading, unloading, transfer and rest, until the unloading of the animals at the place of destination is completed.

Basic requirements regarding the means of transport and the conditions for transport include:

- The means of transport are designed, constructed, maintained and operated so as to avoid injury and suffering and ensure the safety of the animals.

- Sufficient floor area and height is provided for the animals, appropriate to their size and the intended journey.

- During transport in high temperatures there is a risk of thermal stress; that is why it is important to monitor the transported animals.

- During transport, the driver should exercise particular care and avoid sudden manoeuvres.

Stress-inducing factors in transport include: noise, vibrations, changes in thermal conditions, and centrifugal forces. Only healthy animals which do not show any clinical symptoms of a disease can be transported.

Cheval Liberte advice - FAQ or frequently asked questions

Many years of experience of the company staff and their extensive knowledge of horse behaviour and well-being enabled the design and manufacturing of professional trailers, and  has become a source of expertise often used by horse owners. When buying trailers or horse transporters, customers often ask important questions:

Which documents are required for transport within the European Union?

- passport,
- health certificate or health attestation,
- certificate of competence for drivers,
- decision of an official veterinarian, permitting the vehicle to be used for transport,
- route plan (for journeys exceeding 8h),
- documents relating to the means of transport,
- certificate of cleaning and disinfection.

Which documents are required for transport outside the European Union?

- Common Veterinary Entry Document (CVED),
- passport,
- health certificate or health attestation,
- certificate of competence for drivers,
- decision of an official veterinarian, permitting the vehicle to be used for transport,
- route plan (for journeys exceeding 8h),
- documents relating to the means of transport,
- certificate of cleaning and disinfection.

What are the things that should be considered when buying a trailer?

Animal transport vehicles must have a design which ensures the safety of animals during loading, transport and unloading. They need to be kept in an impeccable condition; sharp edges are not permitted, since they could harm an animal. The trailers must have roofs in order to protect horses in transport. Sufficient standing space must also be provided. The ventilation system is particularly important. It should provide a constant supply of fresh air and reduce humidity and heat. The floor should be made of anti-slip materials. The entire design should make use of materials enabling quick cleaning and disinfection.

What should I bear in mind when loading a horse on a trailer?

Horses are herd animals which feel secure in herds and run away to survive. Several days before a scheduled journey you should check how the animals respond to being taken to the trailer. As you know, every horse is an individual case, so reactions may differ and it is impossible to provide a template. It is important not to train the horse how to enter a trailer on the day of the journey, when the excitement will have negative impact on your patience. Such a training requires repetition and time, and its results are a combination of the horse's trust and the rider's approach. There are many tried and tested methods of loading a horse on a trailer. However, you should always mind the safety of the horse as well as your own.

The most important features of a trailer: stripping a trailer down to basics

Many years of experience, extensive research and observations have resulted in a constantly growing group of satisfied customers. Horse trailers are purpose-built vehicles, designed for transporting horses. They are fitted with innovative technological solutions to ensure the well-being and safety of horses. An interesting feature is the partition adjustment system, enabling the transport of smaller and larger horses. Floors are made of layered waterproof plywood or aluminium with an additional anti-slip rubber mat. Side windows provide ventilation and continuous air flow.

I. MATERIALS

Cheval Liberte trailers are available in several variants:

- polyester trailers,
- aluminium and polyester trailers,
- wood and polyester trailers.

The trailers have the capacity of one, two, three or four horses. The gross vehicle mass (GVM) of a trailer depends on a model, and ranges from 900 kg to 3,500 kg. The materials used as well as appropriate and regular maintenance will guarantee a long product life.

II. SUSPENSION

Our trailers are built on a durable frame equipped with four wheels fitted with brakes. The PULLMAN suspension system featuring springs and shock absorbers with a lowered centre of gravity provides a smooth ride with reduced trailer movements when driving on uneven road surfaces.

The floor is so low that the ramp could be dispensed with altogether. The drawbar of the trailer frame is curved so that the coupling remains at the right height for the hauling vehicle.

This suspension concept was also used in Gold II, Optimax and Minimax trailers. The PULLMAN suspension system reduces noise and ensures peaceful, comfortable and stress-free transport for horses.

III. COLOUR

For discerning tastes, Cheval Liberte offers – alongside the standard palette – also unusual colours, such as wine red or various shades of grey. Trailers in brighter colours are recommended for practical reasons, as they absorb less sunlight than dark-coloured trailers.

IV. Something for the discerning customer – extra options

Aside from the standard equipment, each trailer can be custom-fitted with additional elements:

- permanent lockable saddle rack with feeders,
- aluminium floor,
- front unloading ramp,
- spare wheel with a bracket and a cover,
- mudguards,
- polyester cover, alloy wheels, etc.

It takes two to tango – Cheval Liberte trailers' beautiful curves and practical solutions

Seven years – this is how long it took to develop the final shape of our trailers. During that time, Cheval Liberte tested over forty models! Starting from single-horse trailers through double and three-horse ones to those that can accommodate four horses. The high quality of selected materials along with the highly-specialised technology resulted in a product which combines refined taste and practical application. The heart of Cheval Liberte is the design office and its experienced engineers. It is here that the seeds for ideas are planted, which subsequently result in such innovative solutions. Cheval Liberte is a pioneer in mass production of polyester trailers. Our modern manufacturing facilities enable us to use durable steel frames. These frames are perfectly balanced and flawlessly fit the trailers' design.

We encourage you to take a look at a gallery of Cheval Liberte trailers.
