INAUGURATION OF THE NEW RACING SEASON AT SŁUŻEWIEC ON SUNDAY
This Sunday, 23 April, at 14.00, the new 73rd season will be inaugurated, and this year it will last until 19 November. On the first day 8 races will take place, for which 64 horses have been entered. Traditionally before the first race the famous „Ruuuszyły…” [„And off they go…..”] will be heard, and the spectators will hear the evergreen hit by Jarema Stempowski, „Bomba w górę”. After that the spectators’ attention will concentrate only on the main actors of the show, that is the horses and the jockeys riding them. After the winter break the enthusiasts of this royal sport will have full 54 emotional racing days in front of them at the Warsaw race course, Służewiec. A total of 452 races have been planned for 2017: 268 races for thoroughbreds, 163 for Arabians and 20 for French trotters. The total prize money will slightly exceed PLN 8 million. The most interesting events of the 2017 season will certainly be the Opening (23 April), Ruler’s Prize (21 May), Derby Gala (2 July), Lira/Oaks Prize (30 July), the Arabian Day (20 August), St. Leger (28 August) and Wielka Warszawska [Warsaw Grand Prix] (24 September).

GOLD FUERTE AND SILVER NORMA AT THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW IN DUBAJU DIAHC
Polish horses put up a great performance at the International Horse Show in Dubai (DIAHC) on 16 – 18 March 2017. Horses bred both by state as well as private studs firmly marked their presence. The most prominent winner was the stallion Fuerte (Shanghai EA - Frymuszka/Ekstern) bred by Jan Dobrzyński and owned by Sami Ben Saad, who won the gold medal in the Junior Stallions’ Championship. In his class of 3-year old stallions Fuerte came first with a score of 93.10 points. Another medal, silver this time, was awarded to Michałów’s Norma (Gazal Al Shaqab - Nina/Monogramm), who thus became the Vice-Champion of Senior Mares. The title of Champion was granted to FT Shaella ( Shael Dream Desert - Soul Pretty TGS) owned by the Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. Norma actually won in the 10-year old mares’ class but did not manage to keep the position in the ultimate contest. Another mare raised in Michałów also competed in this class, Pistoria (Gazal Al Shaqab – Palmira/Monogramm), who finally came fourth. In the 4 – 6 year olds mares’ class the fourth place was also awarded to Clarissima (Esparto – Calineczka/ Metropolis NA) bred by Marek Kondrasiuk. The fifth place in the 10 year old stallions’ class was given to the Michałów-bred stallion Drabant (Gazal Al Shaqab – Demona/Monogramm).

GREAT PEOPLE ALWAYS PASS AWAY TOO SOON - ROMAN PANKIEWICZ 1924 - 2016
Roman Pankiewicz, an unsurpassable authority on Arabian horse breeding and history, a man with an unusual sense of humour, passed away on 6 December at the age of 92. The story of his life abounded in events that could easily make up half a dozen biographies. Roman Pankiewicz was born in 1924 in Kapłanowice. He and his mother were deported to Siberia in 1940 – 1946. After returning to Poland he graduated from the Agricultural University in Olsztyn and in 1951 started work at the State Horse Stud in Albigowa, which became the birthplace of the stallion he bred, which changed the course of history. Since then nothing was the same.

THERE WEREN'T ANY SURPRISES - WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN PARIS 2016
We need not emphasize that the World Horse Championship in Paris is one of the highest ranking Arabian horse shows. The contestants include horses and breeders who are likely to be the trendsetters in the near future. This year horses from Janów and those of private breeders were not represented. Only the Michałów team appeared in Paris. Polish horses won the highest awards on numerous occasions, displaying their top quality. And although the quality of Polish horses remains (still) the same, the results of this year’s Championship can hardly surprise. Already after the Cup of Nations in Aachen it was clear what is to be expected in Paris. Five ladies from Michałów: Emanolla (Vitorio TO - Emandoria/Gazal Al Shaqab), EL Larinera (Empire - El Emeera/Ekstern), Galerida (Shanghai E.A. - Galilea/Laheeb), Pustynia Kahila (Kahil Al Shaqab - Pustynna Malwa/Ekstern) and Emmona (Monogramm - Emilda/Pamir) were responsible for representing our country. Three returned with Top Ten titles, none could hope for a medal in the finals.
