„HORSE CARRIAGES OF THE MENDYKA COMPANY”
In past centuries horse-drawn carriages were, and still are today, not only an object used for moving from place to place, go hunting or for a walk, or for the unique sport of carriage driving. They were also an element of prestige that reflected the wealth of their owner. Depending on the type of carriage, the type of fabric used for upholstery and who built them it was possible to assess the class of the carriage.

THE 35th NATIONAL ARABIAN HORSE SHOW AND PRIDE OF POLAND AUCTION - JANOW 2013
On the picture: El Saghira
The Arabian Horse Days and annual Pride of Poland auction traditionally took place in Janów Podlaski on the 16th – 19th of August. A total of 120 horses of different age groups were presented in various classes.
Sunday however remains the most exciting day. First the 25th National Arabian Horse Show took place, at which the mare Norma 2004 (Gazal Al Shaqab/Nina) from Michałów proved to be an unrivalled star and won not only the highest place in her class (7 – 10 year old mares) but also the prizes Best Mare in Show, Gold Medal of the Older Mares Championship, Best Head in Show and Best Mover in Show.
Sunday’s most awaited attraction was the show of auction horses and the 44th Pride of Poland auction. 27 mares were on offer, of which 22 were sold for a total of 2 million 72 thousand Euro.
Arabian Derby at the Służewiec race course in Warsaw, July 28, 2013
The first two-day race of the second part of the 2013 season at the Służewiec Race Course appears to be very attractive. 166 horses have been entered to the 18 races (9 on Saturday and 9 on Sunday). The key point of the Sunday program is the Arabian Derby (at 16.15 hrs(, a spectacular race over a distance of 3000 m, that is 600 m longer than the race with the same name for Thoroughbreds, which took place on 7 July. The total prize money is PLN 78 500 (PLN 45 000 for the winner).
However, the Arabian Derby is not the only race worth watching during coming two-day races at Służewiec. Among the pure-bred races we also recommend Figaro Prize race (2400 m, 16.30 hrs), which has 11 entered contestants and a great favourite in the Russian bred Kazbek, unbeaten in four starts at the Warsaw race track. It is highly likely that a track record will be broken during this race if the light condition of the ground holds.
The origin of horse breeds. By: Jacek Kobus (part 2)
Interestingly, so far it has been impossible to alienate a „female family“ typical for the pure Arabian breed. On the contrary, the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa possess their own, characteristic female „family“, so it cannot be ruled out that the Berber horse we know today is historically older than the Arabian (until now the contrary was assumed, beyond any discussion...). In addition, the Berber breed is closely related to the horse breeds typical of the Iberian Peninsula, and shows no kinship with the Arabian horse. Thanks to the Spanish conquest of the New World the C1 „female family“, typical for the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, made a global career: 31% of wild mustangs from the American steppes and the horse breeds formed with mustang influence belong to this family.
„In search of a common language: non-verbal communication between horse and man”. “Communication of horses in a herd”. By: Jolanta Gębka
The horse, being a herd animal, has a great need for company. The herd enables it to fulfill its behavioral needs. In natural conditions herds of wild horses consisted of stallions and mares in more or less the same proportions. Today it is virtually impossible to observe such herds.
In his book „From my hands to yours” Monty Roberts describes his observations of wild horses’ behaviour. Due to his work with mustangs living in conditions which were almost ideally like natural ones, where there was almost entirely no contact with people, Roberts was able to observe the natural behavior of horses as well as the communication system within the herd. He concluded that the entire communication process is based on body language. This is a system of gestures, almost indiscernible body signs, which may be compared with sign language. In order not to draw the attention of predators the horse must remain as quiet as possible. The mustangs from Nevada observed by Roberts used sound communication very rarely in comparison with domesticated horses.
The origin of horse breeds. By: Jacek Kobus (part 1)
The term „rasa“ [„race, breed“]was used for the first time (albeit with respect to people) in French, by François Bernier in 1684, in his essay “Nouvelle division de la terre par le différents espèces ou races qui l’habitent“n the German language area it was popularized by the Swiss scholar Johann Fredrich Blumenbach in 1775. In Polish however it was still unknown to the first edition of the „Dictionary of the Polish language“ of Samuel Bogumił Linde dating from 1807 – 1812.Only in the third and fourth decade of the 19th century the heated dispute bettween „Anglomaniacs“ (Thoroughbred lovers) and „Arabophiles“ (purebred Arabian lovers) introduced the concept of breed and purebred stock into the Polish scientific language.
Post-war history of breeding pure Arabians in Poland
In the Polish Peoples’ Republic horse breeding, including Arabians, was strictly limited to state owned studs, specifically Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Kurozwęki. After nearly 20 years of reconstruction effort Polish breeding was ready for the first auction of pure bred Arabians, which took place in Janów Podlaski in 1970. It quickly gained an excellent reputation which it enjoys to this day.
The great success of Polish horses, the interest of buyers and the high prices encouraged the authorities to allow an increase in the numbers of Arabian stock in Poland. The horses bred in our country went to elite breeders in the USA, Germany and Great Britain.

The history of breeding Arabian horses in Poland in a nutshell
The presence of oriental horses on the territory of Poland was first mentioned during the wars with the Turks and Tartars which took place in the 14th – 17 centuries. During this period Polish military men were had the opportunity to capture Arabian stallions for domestic breeding purposes, since these were the horses used by the Muslim armies.
According to the literature the first breeder in Poland was King Zygmunt August (1520-1572), whose stud was located in Knyszyn, Podlasie Province. However, it is uncertain on what scale Arabian stock was used in the breeding activity, and it is quite doubtful that purity of the breed was preserved. It may be assumed that pure Arabians were used to improve domestic stock.
